Descripció:
This thesis examines the influence of public space design and programming on public life diversity in Barcelona’s public spaces. Using a comparative research approach and Gehl’s Public Life Diversity Toolkit, the study investigates the role of design and programming in activating and diversifying public life. Additionally, the research explores the relationship between built form, space functionality, and public life diversity. The analysis categorizes the selected public spaces as Residential Yards, Transit Paths, or Plazas based on design indicators and daily use patterns. Findings indicate that spaces with both good design and functionality are identified as «Vibrant» in public life, showcasing diverse activities, especially when commercial activities are present. These results support the hypothesis and highlight the significance of space functionality in promoting a diverse and vibrant public life. The findings contribute valuable insights for future sustainable interventions in public spaces, with implications for urban environments on a larger scale.
